S names Virupaksha

 

the Virupaksha temple Hampi, dedicated to Lord Shiva.

Lord is shown with three eyes, two for feeling the senses as any human and third, for perception, deeper knowledge, 'seeing' without seeing.

This depiction is to show that He can see things in all directions, located far and near, located in various dimensions, spaces, universes. He can see things like mind reading which are not normally seen by the two eyes.

The three eyed Lord is celebrated as Triambak, Trinetra, Tiraksha, Trinayana etc various names. After opening, when inwardly directed the third eye gives vision and peace for everything, when outwardly directed has turned Kama the God of love into ashes and can be very powerful.

Lord's very popular mantra is Yajurved Mahamritunjaya Mantra, which starts with invoking the three eyed Triambak form.

His eyes have intrigued sages and seers in various ways, different than say Krishna or Rama. The Shvetashvatara Upnishad describes Him having a thousand eyes, as Rudra can see everything, other places describe as Him saying 'I am not the eyes, ears, nose or any other sense, I am pure eternal bliss, I am Shiva's

One such description is Virupaksha - the one without normal eyes, or the one who can see beyond what normal eyes can.

In this form Lord is worshipped as one with giant body and thousands of eyes all over that see everything.

The Atma Linga of Virupaksha temple changes colors during the day. It was handed over to Rishi Attreya by Lord after Rishi did penace in this place for many years.

Near Virupaksha temple is Pampa sarovar where Ma performed penace in the form of Pampa Devi, who is the Devi of Virupaksha form of Lord.

Virupaksha also comes in Ramayana. This is where Shabri used to live and met Lord Ram dying His search of Sita Ma
